A York microbrewery whose beer has just been listed on the menu of a Michelin-starred restaurant has teamed up with a local design agency to launch a new look for its bottled beers during the York Food and Drink Festival.
Treboom, based at Shipton by Beningborough, has worked with York-based United by Design to come up with eye-catching new labels for three of its most popular beers: Yorkshire Sparkle, Kettle Drum and Baron Saturday. The launch coincides with the news that top London restaurant Pied à Terre, as well as its sister establishment, L’Autre Pied, will be serving some of Treboom’s finest Yorkshire brews to its discerning West End clientele. Pied à Terre has won a host of awards and accolades, including a Michelin star; thanks to United by Design the superb beers will now look as good as they taste!
Established two years ago on the site of a former pig farm, Treboom is now a successful niche brewery owned and operated by former scientist John Lewis and his artist partner Jane Blackman. Between them they seem to have come up with the formula for perfect beer, and the business is going from strength to strength. John and Jane have always been passionate about matching beer with food, and their approach has obviously appealed to those with the most refined of palates. The new label designs are bold and colourful, reflecting the individual personality of each Treboom beer.
Owen Turner, owner and creative director of United by Design, says “It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with a fantastic, local company like Treboom. Beer-making is obviously a combination of science and artistry, so it was important for us to reflect that. Treboom’s beer is a premium product, not available in supermarkets, so its uptake by restaurants and specialist food shops meant that the bottles needed to have real impact and stand out on the shelf. I think we’ve managed to achieve that really well by working together. Each Treboom brew has its own identity and story, so that featured very strongly in our designs”.
Jane Blackman of Treboom says “We chose to work with United by Design because they seemed to get what we were about, were very enthusiastic, had fresh ideas and made the whole process enjoyable. We knew we could work with them as they are very friendly and open, and Owen understands about beer at all levels!”
John Lewis continues “This is an exciting development for our business as we’re trying to attract beer drinkers who are not necessarily pub-goers by expanding our bottled range. New label designs will enable us to promote exciting new beers that might not necessarily work that well in the cask, plus some limited edition special brews.”
United by Design is building something of a reputation for its beverage branding, having previously carried out work for companies such as Sloe Motion and Tea Cubed. Meanwhile, Treboom’s appeal to connoisseurs continues as it has been selected to supply the only bottled beer to new London Champagne bar Tirage, which serves the largest selection of Champagnes by the glass in the UK. So it’s cheers all round!
