For all those who are obsessed with ‘This is England ’88’ here are some snippets from ‘The Face’ magazine, October 1988 edition. It should help fill the void and get you your ’88 fix.

If you want to channel the 1988 look, be sure to wear a smattering of bling, an oversized black mourning coat, reference religious iconography and style in your dress, listen to Acid Jazz, Northern Soul, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Smiths.

Recent changes in technology means listening to friend’s mixes on your Panasonic Walkman, and dreaming of visiting New York and Manchester. Your collection of books will show an interest in politics and early 20th century art movements.

Since I was aged only three at the time and have very distant memories of 1988, I can’t lay much claim to that particular year. However, it’s great to look back and see what the older kids were into whilst I was rocking the toddler group.

I would LOVE to see a Banksy in York–how appropriate. So many quirky and unique shops are vanishing, replaced by tourist trinkets, the ever more ubiquitous coffee shops, or snack shops. York is in danger of losing its soul to the quick-fix of tourist money. How would Banksy spray that onto a wall? Banksy? I offer you a challenge.
