Pop-up art galleries to appear across York city centre in secret locations from 26th October-3rd November

York College student to see his designs for promotional material go to print on Thursday 26th September

From the 26th October- 3rd November the public are invited to discover a pop-up art galleries across York city centre in top secret locations to coincide with the ever-popular Illuminating York Festival.

York Museums Trust, working with York College, will be exhibiting work from four exciting artists that has been inspired by the ARTIST ROOMS: Bruce Nauman exhibition, currently on display at York St Mary’s contemporary art space, Castlegate.

Their work will go on show in several different locations throughout the city, with details being announced on-line shortly before they open.

As part of the upcoming pop-up art gallery project, York Museum Trust put out a bid to the Graphic Design  students at York College to create artwork suitable for promotional material. Oliver Campey, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts Degree course in Graphic Design at YorkCollege, was chosen as graphic designer for the project.

Alan Preston, Programme Leader at York College comments: “In the second year of the BA Graphic Design course there is a strong vocational focus. All students participate in ‘real life’ briefs commissioned by external clients. This year, the Yorkshire Museum Trust set students to work under commercial constraints to see a job through from the initial briefing and design presentation to commercial production. It is a valuable opportunity for students to develop a range of practical design and communication skills.”

Oliver said: “Through my years of studying I have rarely had the opportunity to work with real clients and this is the perfect chance to achieve that. It counts for a lot more when you are out there, physically meeting clients and discussing work together rather than sat behind a computer screen.”

Oliver will be visiting the local, family-owned printing company, Peter Turpin Associates for a guided tour and to see his artwork go to print.

There are two practicing artists and two arts graduates exhibiting their work at the events. These are: Yvonne Carmichael, Poppy Whatmore, Bonnie Powell and Charlotte Salt.

Secret locations will be revealed here and the public can follow the project using @YorkArtGallery and  Facebook.com/yorkartgallery.

More information about the artists and their work for the Pop Up Galleries will be released shortly.
