A pinch and a punch for the first of the month. We’re not sure how June is already upon us but here it is and it brings with it National Volunteer Week.
At One&Other, we’ve harboured a long-term ambition to spark positive change in and around York and give good causes the voice they quite clearly deserve. With that in mind we’re pleased to announce some exciting news.
Today, we’re launching our 30 Days of Doing Good campaign and a small but important update to our cause articles to make volunteering to local charities easier than ever before. Say “hello” to the ‘pledge button’…
Ok, perhaps not the catchiest of names but it seems to encapsulate what we’re trying to achieve. Everyday in June (and ongoing thereafter), we’ll be featuring a different local cause and the pressing needs and opportunities they have for volunteers. We’ll be covering the breadth and depth of good causes including animal, arts, homelessness, health, care, heritage, aid and addictions, and more, with opportunities to give back ranging from a single hour as a one-off to community projects and longer term commitments. The idea is that you learn a bit more about the good work that is already happening on your doorstep and how you can be a part of it. The focus is on your time, skill, and passion, rather than your money.
The ‘pledge button’ will appear on the right-hand side of relevant cause articles where you can respond to a call for volunteers in one small step and be put directly in touch with the charity in question.
It’s hardly rocket science but we believe One&Other is the first local media company in the UK (and perhaps beyond) to link solutions journalism to facilitating good deeds in this way. We hope that what is a small step for us turns out to be a giant leap for volunteering in York. Together we can make a huge difference in the local community and be the change we want to see in the world.
